Brief Overview of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, Uttar Pradesh:-

The Food and Civil Supplies Department, Uttar Pradesh, is a vital department of the State Government. Its primary objective is to make food grains and essential commodities available to the citizens of the state at fair prices and to manage the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Brief Description:-

The Food and Civil Supplies Department operates under the aegis of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), it provides food grains—such as wheat, rice, etc.—at affordable rates to eligible families. The Department manages the issuance of ration cards, the storage and transportation of food grains, and the distribution of rations through Fair Price Shops.

Key Functions :-

• Operation of the Public Distribution System (PDS) – Providing subsidized food grains to poor and eligible families.
• Issuance of Ration Cards – Creating, amending, and managing lists of ration cards for eligible families.
• Procurement and Storage of Food Grains – Purchasing paddy and wheat from farmers and ensuring their safe storage.
• Operation of Fair Price Shops – Distributing food grains through ration shops.
• Price Control and Monitoring – Ensuring the availability of essential commodities and curbing hoarding and black marketing.

Main Objectives:-

• To provide food grains at affordable rates to poor and needy citizens.
• To make the food grain distribution system transparent and effective.
• To ensure food security within the district.
• Supply of LPG cylinders, petrol, diesel, and CNG.

Key Schemes:-
1. National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA)
Under this Act, eligible families are provided with food grains at affordable rates.
Free distribution of food grains (wheat, rice) is provided until the year 2028.
Food security is extended to a large segment of the state’s population.
2. ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ Scheme
Under this scheme, beneficiaries can procure their rations using their ration cards from anywhere within the country.
This scheme is particularly beneficial for migrant workers.

Monitoring and Control of LPG Cylinders, Petrol, Diesel, and CNG:-

• To curb black marketing, illegal storage, and irregular distribution of LPG cylinders, petrol, diesel, and CNG, the Department conducts regular inspections and raids.
• Inspection drives are carried out at thousands of locations by the District Administration and departmental teams to ensure a smooth supply of gas.
